Internet2

Abstract

A Internet2 é uma iniciativa norte-americana, voltada para o desenvolvimento de tecnologias e aplicações avançadas de redes Internet para a comunidade acadêmica e de pesquisa. A iniciativa envolve 150 universidades norte-americanas, além de agências do governo e indústria e visa o desenvolvimento de novas aplicações como telemedicina, bibliotecas digitais, laboratórios virtuais, dentre outras que não são viáveis com a tecnologia Internet atual. O objetivo final da iniciativa não é somente o desenvolvimento de pesquisas exclusivamente voltadas para a área acadêmica, mas também a transferência, ao setor comercial, das tecnologias desenvolvidas e testadas ao longo da execução dos projetos. O Brasil, através do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (MCT) e da Rede Nacional de Pesquisa (RNP), vem acompanhando de perto os desenvolvimentos da Internet2, tendo participado de vários encontros de trabalho de seus líderes. A participação formal do Brasil e de suas instituições de ensino superior e centros de pesquisa foi também incluída no acordo de cooperação em tecnologias para a educação, assinado em outubro de 1997, por ocasião da visita do presidente Clinton ao Brasil. Deste modo, o Brasil vai se preparando para integrar-se ao projeto Internet2, na medida em que apresente todas as condições técnicas necessárias para a sua participação.

Internet2 it is a North American initiative, gone back to the development of technologies and advanced applications of Internet nets for the academic and research community. The initiative involves 150 North American universities, besides the government's agencies and industry and it seeks the development of new applications as telemedicine, digital libraries, virtual laboratories, and another that are not viable with the current Internet technology. The objective of this initiative is not exclusively only the development of researches gone back to the academic area, but also the transfer, to the commercial section, of the developed and tested technologies along the execution of the projects. Brasil, through Ministry of the Science and Tecnhology (MCT) and Nation Net of Research (RNP), it comes accompanying the developments of Internet2, having participated in several encounters of its leader's work. The formal participation of Brazil and of its higher education institutions and research centers it was alo included in the cooperation agreement in technologies for the education, signed in October of 1997, by occasion of the visit of president Clinton to Brazil. This way, Brazil is going getting ready to be integrated to the Internet2 project, in the measure in that presents all the necessary technical conditions for its participation.
